Ningxia University is a university jointly established by the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, a national "double first-class" university, and a key university under the national "211 Project".
Ningxia University was founded in 1958. In December 1997, Ningxia University merged with the former Ningxia Institute of Technology and Yinchuan Normal College (including Ningxia College of Education); In February 2002, it merged with Ningxia Agricultural College to form the new Ningxia University. In April 2014, the Zhongwei Campus of Ningxia University was established; In September 2017, it was selected as a national "double first-class" construction university; In February 2018, it became a joint university established by the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.
The school is located in Yinchuan City, a famous historical and cultural city with a long history and beautiful scenery, covering an area of 2,935.54 acres, a teaching experimental farm of 2,050.18 acres, and a school building area of 924,000 square meters. There are 2,718 faculty members in the school. It recruits students from 28 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central government, and currently has 19,561 full-time undergraduate students, 5,143 full-time master's students, 608 full-time doctoral students, 990 minority preparatory students, and 212 international students. The 7th Party Congress of Ningxia University determined the development goal of "building Ningxia University into a first-class university in the western region with distinctive regional characteristics and outstanding ability to serve the local area by 2025", clarified the two main lines of work of "cultivating people with virtue and cultivating people with 'three comprehensive education' as the core" and "the main line of 'joint construction of ministries and regions' with the construction of 'double first-class' as the core", formulated seven key tasks, and strived to start a new journey of building a first-class university in the western region.
At present, the university has 1 national "double first-class" construction discipline of "Chemical Engineering and Technology", 2 advantageous and characteristic disciplines of "Chemical Engineering and Technology" and "Ethnology", 1 national key discipline of "Pratacultural Science", and 1 national key (cultivation) discipline of "History of Chinese Ethnic Minorities". There are 18 key disciplines in the autonomous region, 8 advantageous and characteristic disciplines in the 13th Five-Year Plan, 8 key disciplines in the 13th Five-Year Plan, and 16 first-class construction disciplines in the autonomous region. There are 7 first-level discipline doctoral programs, 31 first-level discipline master's programs, 22 professional master's degree authorization programs, and 3 postdoctoral research stations.

The school has always adhered to the principle of "cultivating people with virtue" as the foundation, and continuously improved the quality of talent training. Strengthen the central position of talent training, cultivate high-quality talents in accordance with the goal of "sound personality, solid foundation, social adaptability and development potential", determine the teaching reform idea of "strengthening the foundation, strengthening practice, developing specialties, focusing on innovation, and diverting training", through the construction of two programs (professional training program, personality training program), improve two systems ("four-in-one" classroom teaching quality evaluation system and teaching quality monitoring system), and create five platforms (general education platform, teacher education platform, Curriculum construction platform, student practical ability training platform, student innovation ability training platform) to be implemented. The Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Education have jointly established 2 collaborative innovation centers, 7 school-enterprise innovation consortiums, and 36 autonomous region-level scientific research platforms.
Adhering to the road of opening up and running schools, based on regional characteristics and advantageous disciplines, the university has established substantive partnerships with 45 universities (scientific research institutions) in 22 countries and regions, and cooperated with the University of Dubai in the U.A.E. to establish the first Confucius Institute in the GCC countries. It has established a "5+N" inter-university cooperative relationship with five universities including Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and established a "5+N" school-local, school-enterprise, government-industry-university-research-application cooperative relationship with five cities and districts/counties in Ningxia, so as to deeply integrate into the mainstream "academic circle" and the local economic and social development of Ningxia. The university is one of the first batch of universities approved by the Ministry of Education to accept foreign students, is the receiving institution for international students in China under the Chinese Government Scholarship, the receiving institution for international students in China under the local government of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, and the only HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test) test center in Ningxia. Since 1992, more than 4,000 international students from more than 40 countries have come to study at the university.
