Qinghai University is located in Xining, the ancient city of the plateau. The school was formerly known as Qinghai Institute of Technology, which was founded in 1958. In November 1960, it was merged with Qinghai Agriculture and Animal Husbandry College, Qinghai Medical College, and Qinghai University of Finance and Economics to form Qinghai University, which was abolished in 1969. In 1971, Qinghai Institute of Industry and Agriculture was restored, with two departments: engineering and agriculture. In 1988, Qinghai University was restored. In October 1997, Qinghai College of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine was merged into Qinghai University. In January 2001, Qinghai Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences, Qinghai Academy of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences, and Qinghai Vocational College of Finance and Economics were reorganized into Qinghai University, and in 2004, Qinghai Medical College was merged into the new Qinghai University.
At present, the university has developed into a teaching and research university with coordinated development of engineering, agriculture, medicine, management, economics, science, law and interdisciplinary disciplines. The school covers an area of 3,239.88 acres, recruiting students from 31 provinces (municipalities and autonomous regions) around the world and across the country, with more than 26,000 full-time students, including nearly 21,000 undergraduates and more than 5,000 graduate students. At present, the university has 5,352 faculty members (including 2,191 in teaching and research units and 3,161 in affiliated hospitals), nearly 800 doctors, 1,821 professional and technical personnel, 943 senior professional titles, 294 senior professional titles (22 second-level professors), 46 national talents, and 42 people enjoying special allowances from the State Council.
