Founded in 1958, Lanzhou Jiaotong University is the third railway university in China formed by the division of Tangshan Railway Institute (now Southwest Jiaotong University) and Beijing Railway Institute (now Beijing Jiaotong University). At present, the school is a university jointly established by China State Railway Group Co., Ltd., the State Railway Administration and the Gansu Provincial People's Government, the authorized construction unit of the Confucius Institute at the University of Seville in Spain, the university supported by the "Midwest Education Revitalization Program" of the Ministry of Education, the "Outstanding Engineer Education and Training Program" of the Ministry of Education selected as a university, the Ministry of Education's "Deepening Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Reform Demonstration University", a high-level university and a "first-class discipline" construction university in Gansu Province, and is a "three-to-one" university of Tianjin University, Beijing Jiaotong University and Southwest Jiaotong University approved by the Ministry of Education"Counterpart support for universities. The school is a demonstration base for international students from the Ministry of Education, and has a large number of talent training bases, such as the National Language Promotion Base, the National Railway Science Popularization Base, the National Beidou Science Popularization Base, the Cultural Inheritance Base of the Ministry of Education, and the Minor Language Training Base in Northwest China.
The predecessor of the school can be traced back to the Shanhaiguan Beiyang Railway Official School established in 1896 and the Beijing Railway Management Institute established in 1909. In 1958, the Ministry of Railways decided to establish China's third railway undergraduate university in Lanzhou - Lanzhou Railway College. More than 340 experts and scholars from the Beijing Railway Institute (i.e., Beijing Railway Management Institute, now Beijing Jiaotong University) and Tangshan Railway Institute (i.e., Shanhaiguan Beiyang Railway School, now Southwest Jiaotong University) moved to Lanzhou as a system, and more than 340 experts and scholars from the Jingtang and Tang Academies represented by Lin Damei, Shen Zhiyang, Hu Chunnong, Sun Qiyin, and Zhang Dianzhi came to Lanzhou to teach, and successfully realized the enrollment of 446 freshmen that year. In the 60s, a group of associate doctors and graduate students of science and technology in the Soviet Union were selected to enrich the teaching team, and the older generation of educators led students from all over the world to work hard in the difficult environment of the northwest to open the first years of Lanzhou Jiaotong University with their wisdom and emotion of building, loving and honoring the school. In 2000, the school implemented the system of "joint construction by the central and local governments, and management by local governments". In 2003, Lanzhou Railway Institute was renamed Lanzhou Jiaotong University. The school has made remarkable achievements in talent training, scientific research, social service, cultural inheritance and innovation and international exchanges, and has now developed into a university with distinctive industry characteristics, outstanding ability to serve the local community, domestic reputation and irreplaceable in the construction of rail transit in Northwest China.
The school has two campuses, covering an area of 1,405 acres, with a building area of about 777,000 square meters and a library collection of 2,365,309 books. There are 21 directly affiliated colleges (departments) and 1 national university science and technology park. At present, there are 30,883 full-time students, including 22,045 undergraduates, 7,735 graduate students (7,318 master's students, 417 doctoral students), 244 international students, and 729 higher vocational students.

Seven of them were selected into the top 2% of the world's top scientists. There are more than 340 high-level talents, including 1 winner of the National Millions of Talents Project, 5 New Century Outstanding Talents of the Ministry of Education, 26 leading talents in Gansu Province, and winners of the "National May Day Labor Medal", national outstanding teachers, national advanced individuals in teacher ethics, national model teachers, winners of Zhan Tianyou Railway Science and Technology Award, and Mao Yisheng Railway Science and Technology Award.
The university has 70 undergraduate majors, involving 6 disciplines and 35 majors. He has won 4 second prizes of the 2023 National Teaching Achievement Award (2 hosts and 2 participants). There is 1 national teaching team and 1 Huang Danian-style teacher team in national universities. There are 4 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 1 national virtual simulation experiment teaching center, 11 national engineering practice education centers, 19 provincial teaching teams and 16 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers. There are 27 national first-class undergraduate majors, 6 national characteristic majors, 10 provincial first-class majors, 1 national undergraduate major comprehensive reform pilot, 13 national first-class courses, and 3 national excellent courses. There is 1 national talent training innovation experimental area, and 11 (15) majors have passed the professional certification of engineering education.
Relying on the provincial first-class disciplines and the national first-class professional construction sites, the school has set up special classes such as Zhan Tianyou class, Mao Yi promotion class and excellent engineer training program in civil engineering, transportation, vehicle engineering and rail transit signal and control. The training base for top-notch students in the basic disciplines of geographic information science in our university is one of the ten provincial-level top-notch training bases for top-notch students in basic disciplines in Gansu Province.
Relying on the railway industry, the school highlights the characteristics of transportation, and has obvious comparative advantages in transportation, civil engineering, environmental science and engineering, mechanical engineering, information and communication engineering, surveying and mapping science and technology and other disciplines in China. At present, there are 8 disciplines, and 4 disciplines of engineering, chemistry, materials science, and environment and ecology are in the top 1% of ESI global rankings. There are 5 post-doctoral research stations, 6 first-level disciplines authorized for doctoral degrees (including 2 disciplines of engineering and management), 28 first-level disciplines authorized for master's degrees, and 15 professional degree authorized categories for master's degrees. Six disciplines have been selected as "double first-class" characteristic construction projects in Gansu Province, and 24 provincial key disciplines. In the fourth round of discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education, three disciplines, namely traffic and transportation engineering, civil engineering, and environmental science and engineering, were rated as B-class disciplines, and mechanical engineering were rated as B-class disciplines. The discipline of "Traffic and Transportation Engineering" was selected as the "National First-class Discipline Breakthrough Project of Gansu Provincial Universities". In 2023, 28 first-level disciplines of our university will continue to improve in the "soft science" subject ranking, and 5 disciplines, including surveying and mapping science and technology, civil engineering, transportation engineering, mechanical engineering, and control science and engineering, will be on the list (ranking among the top 50% in the country).

In the past five years, it has undertaken more than 4,000 vertical and horizontal scientific research projects, with a total funding of 781 million yuan. Our school has won 74 scientific and technological achievement awards at the provincial and ministerial level and above as the first completion unit, and 28 scientific and technological achievement awards at the provincial and ministerial level and above as a participating unit, including 1 second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, 4 first prizes of the Gansu Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 first prize of the 16th Gansu Provincial Philosophy and Social Science Achievement Award, 1 first prize of the Science and Technology Award of the China Railway Society, and 1 first prize of the National Surveying and Mapping Science and Technology Progress Award. It has established long-term cooperative relations with more than 50 colleges and universities in more than 20 countries and regions, including United States, United Kingdom, France, Russia, Canada, Japan, Spain, and Brazil. In 2021, the school was authorized by the China International Chinese Education Foundation to establish a Confucius Institute with the University of Seville in Spain, which has a history of 500 years, becoming the first university in Gansu Province to jointly establish a Confucius Institute in a developed country.
