The school, formerly known as Bayi Agricultural College, was established by General Wang Zhen in 1952 on the basis of the Second Infantry School of the Chinese People's Liberation Army with the consent of Chairman Mao and the Central Military Commission. The first president was Tu Zhi (member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences), appointed by Wang Zhen, Wang Enmao and other comrades; The first vice president Yang Jie (then deputy chief of staff of the Xinjiang Military Region) and the second vice president Meng Meisheng were appointed by Peng Dehuai and Xi Zhongxun. In 1958, it was transferred to the People's Government of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and renamed Xinjiang Bayi Agricultural College. In 1995, with the approval of the former State Education Commission, it was renamed Xinjiang Agricultural University. In 2006, he was awarded "Excellent" by the Ministry of Education's evaluation of undergraduate teaching level. In 2012, it was selected as a university for the basic capacity building project of universities in the central and western regions. In 2014, it was jointly established by the People's Government of the Autonomous Region and the former State Forestry Administration. The school has four campuses, including Laomancheng, Yaxin, Lugang and Tianger, 7 school-affiliated practice bases and 426 off-campus teaching practice bases, including Xiejiagou Grassland Experimental Station and Hutubi Forage Experimental Demonstration Station. Among them, the Laomancheng Campus (school headquarters) covers an area of about 1,500 acres, the Yaxin Campus covers an area of about 500 acres, the Lugang Campus covers an area of about 4,000 acres, and the Tianger Campus (Internship Forest Farm) covers an area of about 150,000 acres.
