Xi'an University of Technology is a university selected for the national "Midwest Higher Education Revitalization Plan", a university jointly established by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and Shaanxi Province, a key high-level university in Shaanxi Province, and a national "double first-class" cultivation university in Shaanxi Province. The school is one of the important training bases and scientific research centers for senior professionals in China's water conservancy, hydropower and equipment manufacturing industries.
The predecessor of the school was Beijing Institute of Mechanical Engineering and Shaanxi University of Technology. The history of the two schools can be traced back to the establishment of the Beiping Public Commercial Tutorial School in 1919 and the establishment of the National Xi'an Provisional University (later renamed the National Northwest Associated University) in 1937. In 1972, Beijing Institute of Mechanical Engineering and Shaanxi University of Technology merged to form Shaanxi Institute of Machinery, which was subordinate to the First Ministry of Machinery Industry. In 1994, the school was renamed Xi'an University of Technology. In 1998, the school was transferred to Shaanxi Province, and the management system was adjusted to be jointly built by the central government and Shaanxi Province, with Shaanxi Province as the main management. In 1949, the People's Government took over the predecessor school of Beijing Institute of Mechanical Engineering, the National Beiping Senior Industrial Vocational School, as the starting year of the school celebration, and May 1 was the school anniversary.
The university has 3 campuses in Jinhua, Qujiang and Lianhu and 1 university science and technology park. There are more than 18,000 full-time undergraduate students and more than 10,100 doctoral and master's students. There are 2,650 faculty members, including 1,009 with senior titles. At present, there are 17 colleges and 1 teaching department, with 68 undergraduate majors, of which 32 majors have been selected as national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 6 majors have been selected as first-class undergraduate major construction sites in Shaanxi Province, 10 majors have been selected as national characteristic major construction sites, 21 majors have passed the professional certification (evaluation) of engineering education, 16 majors have been selected as characteristic major construction sites in Shaanxi Province, and 8 majors have been selected as famous brand majors in Shaanxi Province. There are 21 experimental teaching centers, including 3 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 18 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, and 3 provincial virtual simulation experimental teaching centers.

The university is one of the first universities in China to obtain the right to confer doctoral, master's and bachelor's degrees. Graduate education began in 1960, with the establishment of the Graduate School in 2011. At present, there are 15 first-level disciplines authorized for doctoral degrees, 2 doctoral professional degree authorized points, 27 first-level disciplines authorized for master's degrees, and 13 master's professional degree authorized points, which belong to 8 disciplines such as engineering, science, management, economics, law, literature, agriculture, and art, forming a discipline layout with engineering-based and multidisciplinary coordinated development. In the "2023 Academic Ranking of World Universities", the university ranks 501-600 in the world and 89-110 in the country.
