Tarim University was founded in October 1958. The school was founded by General Wang Zhen, then Minister of Agriculture and Reclamation, who served as honorary principal during his lifetime. The university is one of the first batch of undergraduate colleges approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council with the right to confer bachelor's degrees, in 2003 it was granted the right to confer master's degrees, in 2004 it was approved by the Ministry of Education to change its name to Tarim University, in 2007 it was rated as "excellent" in the evaluation of undergraduate teaching level of the Ministry of Education, in 2017 it became the "Ministry of Education Innovation and Entrepreneurship Demonstration University", in 2018 it was awarded the right to confer doctoral degrees, in 2019 it entered the Ministry of Education "three comprehensive education" comprehensive reform pilot universities, and in the same year won the "National May Day Labor Award". In 2020, it was awarded the "National Demonstration Unit for National Unity and Progress". In 2021, it was awarded the "National Advanced Collective for Poverty Alleviation". In 2024, it will become a recruitment and training unit for international students in China. It is a university jointly established by the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps and the Ministry of Education. The university is a comprehensive university with the advantage of agricultural science, the characteristics of life science, and the coordinated development of agriculture, science, engineering, medicine, literature, management, economics, law, education, art, history and other disciplines. The school covers an area of 3,872 acres, with a building area of 1,033,200 square meters, and two campuses in the branch headquarters and the eastward expansion area. At present, the school has more than 1,500 faculty members, including 1 famous teacher of the National Special Support Program for High-level Talents, 5 experts with special subsidies from the State Council, 1 national outstanding professional and technical talent, 5 provincial outstanding experts with outstanding contributions, 31 "Tianchi Talents", 49 "Corps Talents", 40 "Tianshan Talents" in the autonomous region, 14 provincial famous teachers and teaching experts, 11 industrial technology innovation teams, and 1 Huang Danian-style teacher team in national universities.
The university has always been rooted in the land of Xinjiang, based on the forefront of the times, serving the national strategy, carrying out scientific research, and has achieved a series of landmark achievements with important theoretical and practical value. In the past five years, the university has undertaken more than 1,780 scientific research projects at all levels, including 1 major bidding project of the National Social Science Fund and more than 780 national, provincial and ministerial projects. He has published more than 140 monographs and textbooks, and more than 670 SCI papers. At present, there is 1 national engineering laboratory (national and local joint engineering laboratory of high-efficiency and high-quality cultivation and deep processing technology of characteristic fruit trees in southern Xinjiang), 1 national key laboratory cultivation base jointly built by provinces and ministries (state key laboratory cultivation base jointly built by provinces and ministries for the protection and utilization of biological resources in Tarim Basin), 1 key laboratory of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (key laboratory of Tarim livestock and grass resources utilization of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs), 1 key laboratory of the Ministry of Education (Tarim Oasis Key Laboratory of Agriculture), 1 XPCC Technology Innovation Center (XPCC South Xinjiang Characteristic Forest and Fruit Technology Innovation Center), 8 Provincial Key Laboratories, 3 Provincial Engineering Laboratories, 2 XPCC Collaborative Innovation (Cultivation) Centers, 3 Provincial Key Research Bases for Humanities and Social Sciences, and 1 XPCC International Science and Technology Cooperation Base.
The university adheres to open education, actively responds to the national "Belt and Road" initiative, attaches great importance to cooperation and exchanges with universities and scientific research institutions at home and abroad, and has established cooperation and exchange relations with 67 universities in 11 countries and regions such as United States, Australia, New Zealand, Kazakhstan, Russia and Pakistan.
